Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Every cemetery in New Jersey operates under its own monument regulations — size limits, permissible styles, installation seasons, and material requirements. Experienced headstone makers know how to navigate those rules before fabrication begins, not after. NJ Headstone Makers reviews each cemetery's current guidelines for every order, verifying dimensions and design elements so the finished memorial is accepted without complication.

Foundation Requirements

A headstone is only as stable as its foundation. NJ Headstone Makers's installation teams prepare concrete foundations to cemetery-specified depths, accounting for the frost line found throughout northern and central NJ. Proper foundation engineering prevents settling and tilting — the most common long-term problems with headstones installed without appropriate groundwork.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

New Jersey's religious diversity is reflected in its cemeteries. Jewish, Catholic, Orthodox Christian, Muslim, and Protestant communities each maintain memorial traditions that headstone makers must understand and respect. NJ Headstone Makers's team is familiar with these distinctions — from the simplicity preferred in many Jewish cemeteries to the ornate relief work welcomed in certain Catholic grounds.

Our Collection

Our Headstones Collection

Headstone Maker / Company

NJ Headstone Makers's headstone collections span the full range of memorial types available to NJ families. Upright headstones — the most recognizable form — stand on bases of matching granite and accept the widest variety of inscriptions and artwork. Slant-cut markers angle the inscription face toward the viewer, a format that suits both formal and contemporary cemetery sections. Flat grave markers lie at or near ground level, required in many municipal and veterans' cemeteries. All three configurations are hand-carved from American-made granite in our Morris County workshop, using a combination of traditional sandblasting and precision rotary engraving. Granite colors available include Classic Black, Balmoral Red, Blue Pearl, Absolute Gray, and several regional varieties. Each stone is polished to specification — typically a mirror finish on the inscription face with a thermal or rock-pitch finish on sides and back. NJ Headstone Makers's artisans have spent 80+ years refining these methods, which means that families receive not just a stone but the cumulative knowledge of generations of New Jersey craftsmen.

Granite Options

The granite a family selects shapes the memorial's long-term character. Classic Black and Jet Black are the most popular choices across NJ cemeteries because of the strong contrast they provide for polished engravings. Blue Pearl and Balmoral Red offer a distinctive mineral shimmer. Mountain Gray and Absolute Gray are neutral, widely accepted in all cemetery types, and carry a timeless quality. NJ Headstone Makers provides physical samples at consultation so families can evaluate actual stone, not just photographs.

Custom Design Process

NJ Headstone Makers's custom design process accommodates every level of personalization, from a straightforward name-and-date inscription to complex multi-panel portrait work. Families provide their materials — photographs, sketches, poetry, military insignia, religious imagery — and our Morris County artisans translate them into a scaled proof reviewed and approved by the family before any stone is touched. Revisions are part of the process, not exceptions.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

NJ Headstone Makers's six-step headstone-making process begins with a consultation at our Morris County showroom, by phone, or remotely. Step one is understanding the person: their faith, their service, their passions, and the words the family wants carried forward. Step two is cemetery coordination: we contact the cemetery to verify current monument regulations. Step three is material selection: granite color, finish, and style — upright, slant, or flat — finalized with the family's input. Step four is design drafting: artisans prepare a scaled proof incorporating all text, symbols, borders, and imagery, then send it to the family for review. Step five is hand-carving: once the family approves every detail in writing, skilled craftsmen at our Morris County workshop cut the stone using sandblasting stencils and rotary tools refined over 80+ years. Step six is installation: NJ Headstone Makers delivers the finished memorial, prepares or inspects the foundation, and sets the stone to cemetery specification. The complete process typically takes eight to twelve weeks.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a headstones?

From initial consultation to cemetery installation, most headstones are completed within eight to twelve weeks. That window includes design drafting, family approval, hand-carving in our Morris County workshop, and coordination with the cemetery for foundation preparation and placement. We give every family an honest timeline at the outset.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. NJ Headstone Makers serves all 14 New Jersey counties from our Morris County headquarters. We handle delivery and professional installation at cemeteries throughout Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson, Union, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean counties — coordinating every step directly with the cemetery office.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Before any stone is cut, NJ Headstone Makers verifies the receiving cemetery's current regulations — permitted height, base dimensions, acceptable finish types, and installation scheduling. Cemetery-compliant specifications are confirmed in writing before fabrication begins, protecting the family's investment and ensuring smooth installation.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Absolutely. Families regularly bring photographs, hand-drawn sketches, military insignia, religious artwork, or personal poetry. Our Morris County artisans incorporate all personal materials into a scaled design proof, which the family reviews and approves before any carving begins. Revisions are a normal part of the process.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. NJ Headstone Makers creates veteran memorial configurations incorporating branch insignia, rank designations, service dates, and authorized emblems. Companion stones honoring a veteran alongside a spouse are also available. We meet national cemetery dimension standards when required.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
